Overview
Creating a Client Portal link is the moment you define how a client will engage with their Asset-Map outside of meetings. When used intentionally, portal access:
Sets clear expectations around collaboration
Reduces ad‑hoc emails and document sharing
Helps clients arrive at meetings better prepared
Reinforces your role as the trusted advisor controlling the process
When you create a Client Portal link, you are:
Creating a link for a client to create a portal account
Assigning a permission set that controls what they can see and do
Granting access to a specific household once accepted
The portal link can be sent with email an invitation — access is not complete until the client accepts the household.
Step-by-Step: How to Create a Client Portal Link
Step 1: Navigate to the Household
Open the client’s Asset‑Map
Confirm the correct household and household member is selected
Portal access is always tied to a household and a link is generated for a member.
Step 2: Open Client Portal Sharing Page
Method 1: With the Sidebar Hidden
With the sidebar option hidden the member's edit window appears in the middle of the Asset-Map.
Click the Client Portal icon.
Select a permission set from the Permission Set menu
Decide whether a specific email is required. If so, enter the email address.
Click the Create Invite button to generate a link.
Click the copy icon adjacent to the new log-in link that was generated.
Paste the invitation link in your email to the client.
Method 2: Within the Sidebar
While in Sidebar view, click the member and scroll to the bottom of the Edit Member window to the Client Portal page. Select the desired permission set, decide if a specific email is required for the client to log in with, click the Create Invite button. Click the copy icon adjacent to the new log-in link that was generated.
Create a Client Portal link from the Household Information page
The same link creation interface exists if you navigate to the Household Information page and Client Portal tab:
Step 1. Navigate to the Household Summary page. Either click the blue household name link in the upper left area, or the Household tab in the left-side menu. Then click Edit.
Step 2. Open the share interface. Click the Client Portal tab, then click the Share Household arrow.
Each household member requires their own portal invitation.
Step 3: Choose the Appropriate Permission Set
Select the permission set that matches your engagement intent:
View Only – for review and transparency
Suggesting Mode – for structured client updates
Custom Permission Set – for tailored visibility or roles
Permission sets determine both visibility and behavior.
Preview Mode
After setting permissions planners have the ability to "see what the client sees." Access preview mode by clicking the Enter client preview icon (blue arrow within a box).
Exit the Advisor's Preview Mode
Exit the preview mode by clicking the advisor likeness in the upper right area and selecting Exit Preview.
Step 4: Create the Portal Link
Confirm the client’s email address
Generate the Client Portal link by clicking the Create Invite button
Copy the link for sharing
Portal links are time‑sensitive (7 days) and must be accepted before they expire.
Step 5: Send the Link with Clear Instructions
Send the portal link to the client with brief, clear guidance:
Click the link
Create a secure login
Accept the shared household
Setting expectations up front significantly reduces follow‑up questions.
Let clients know:
They will not change live data
Suggestions are reviewed before approval
Access can be adjusted later
This reinforces trust.
Best Practices for Advisors
Match Permission sets to Purpose
Before sending the invite, ask:
Is this for viewing only, or do I want updates?
Am I prepared to review suggested changes?
Avoid granting Suggesting Mode unless you plan to act on submissions promptly.
